40% ABV is when a shot or an ounce or 30mL (whichever, they are all the same) is equal to one standrad drink. Therefore a 20% drink such as Malibu means that 2 shots or ounces or 60 mLs is one standrad drink. Most spirits are 40% which is why a shot of vodka, or rum, etc are generally sold as they are a standard drink. Some, though, such as Frangelico or Malibu, are half strength, and so is half a standard drink per shot. Does this make a little more sense?
